What it´s like to be an American in Ecuador

I´ve taken a couple pictures from the last week but I haven´t had time to upload them yet. I´ve been working a lot. But hopefully I´ll be able to take some more pictures in the next couple of days to share with you.

The other day, we had a bit of an awkward experience. A bunch of us were coming back to the house after our shifts in one of the orphanages and we were riding in the back of Angel´s truck. We were riding through Olde Town Quito. It was kind of creepy being in the back of the truck because Olde Town Quito at night is not safe at all and it was getting a little dark. (Don´t worry though, we usually ride in a van to and from shifts but our usual driver is in Cuenca until later tonight.) Anyway, we were riding in the back of the van just talking to each other when we noticed this taxi behind us. There was a guy in the shot gun seat of the taxi with his cell phone out taking pictures of the big group of gringas and one gringo in the back of the truck. The awkward part of it was that he didn´t just take one picture, he took a whole bunch of pictures. We felt like we at a photo shoot. I can only imagine the stories he told his friends as he whipped out his phone and started showing them pictures of the bunch of Americans he saw that day.

On that same ride home, we were stopped at a light and this lady was walking close by us so we said ¨hola.¨ She looked at us and started talking to us in Spanish. Finally, David told her ¨no hablo español.¨ She looked at all of us and said, ¨why not?¨ We just looked at each other and started laughing. Apparently, she´s Ecuadorian but she goes to Chicago or someplace like that a lot. It was fun talking to her for a little bit. She and her husband were really nice.

I caught my first cold this week. I´ve been sick for the past couple of days. It hasn´t been that bad though. There are two types of illnesses that have been going around the house for the past week. Half of the house has gotten the stomach flu and have been throwing up and the other half have had a head cold. So there´s a lot of coughing going on.

On Saturday we are going to Otavalo which is this huge out door market about two hours away from Quito. I´m pretty excited. It´s my first field trip and it´s supposed to be really awesome.

We won't tell your dad about that truck ride. ;) Can you tell us about your work in the orphanages? No names, just age groups and what kinds of things you are doing? We're all dying to know! Hope the field trip was fun!

I can´t talk about what we do in the orphanages over the internet because it´s against the law. So I will have to wait until I get to see you to tell you. It stinks I know but that´s the way it is. But I do work with babies up to about 2 years old for most of the time.

That's why I asked--I thought that might be the case. No problem, we'll hear all about it at Christmas. :) I'm glad you're enjoying it!
